World Plumbing Day!

Today, 11th March is World Plumbing Day.

What on earth is World Plumbing Day? We hear you ask.

It’s an international event organised by the World Plumbing Council designed to highlight and celebrate the vital role plumbing plays in the health and safety of modern society. Today marks its 5th year

Many of us take the availability of safe drinking water and sanitation for granted, but after devastating disasters as the Haiti earthquake in 2010 and the Japanese tsumani in 2011, it becomes all too real that the water we take for granted could be gone in an instant.

Did you know, for example, that there is a freshwater supply of 35 million cubic kilometres globally, but than less than 1 percent is available for human consumption?

Here are some more scary facts:

The advancement of plumbing technology in recent year has seen fantastic developments but it’s important continue the education on water conservation for future generations.

Take a look at this video from the World Plumbing Council to show the importance of plumbing – and don’t forget to check out our handy water saving tips!

Iranian Man Avoids Showers for 60 Years!

A man in Iran has gone 60 years without having a shower. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he also smokes animal faeces(?) and dines on rotten animal carcasses, especially porcupines. Amazingly, he is single, but he’s looking for love. Get in line ladies….

haji-01

The eighty-year-old is called Amou Haji (which is a term of affection in Farsi used by women and children) and he lives in a hole in Dejgah village, a southern province in Iran. He has avoided showers for 60 years claiming that being clean will bring him sickness. He has escaped when people have tried to shower him in the past.  Haji has beaten the record of 66-year-old Indian man Kailash Singh, who has reportedly gone 38 years without having a shower.

To trim his hair, Haji burns it over fire, and he checks his appearance occasionally by looking in the side mirrors of passing cars. He says his eccentric lifestyle is down to emotional setbacks that happened in his youth. But he has achieved fame at least, as the world’s dirtiest man!

Showers for the Homeless – San Francisco Style!

A woman in San Francisco has come up with an ingenious idea to turn old public buses into showering facilities for the city’s homeless people.

Doniece Sandoval, a 51 year old PR executive and mother of one, decided to do something for the 3,400 homeless people in San Francisco. Currently, there are only 16 shower stalls available to them across the city, with very limited opening hours.

Sandoval said she got the idea after seeing a young, filthy homeless woman crying. Sandoval said “She kept saying over and over again she would never be clean, I knew she probably meant that in a lot of ways, but a light bulb went off.” She thought, if we can provide gourmet food on wheels, why not showers?

As someone who had always cared about people on the streets – donating money and time volunteering for homeless charities – she came up with the idea to transform decommissioned Muni buses into shower stalls and drive them to homeless centres. Something as simple as a shower can give people dignity, as well as help them get ready for job interviews. The programme is called Lava Mae (deriving from the Spanish “Lavame” meaning “wash me”.

Doniece now works full time for the programme, which is set to launch in March. Lava Mae currently has one bus, with three more set to join the programme if it is successful. The buses will be painted blue to give them a new look and each bus will have two hygiene units consisting of a shower, sink, toilet, mirror, changing room and bench. The programme will have three staff members (including Doniece herself), as well as a volunteer social worker who will be advising homeless people about other services available to them. There will be no charge to use the facilities, and the programme will operate completely on donations and grants.

Bank Holiday Deals…This Weekend!

It’s another Bank Holiday weekend, so what will you be doing with your extra day off work? Let’s be honest, the weather is usually a let down so most of us end us inside – either at home or in a shopping centre somewhere taking advantage of the Bank Holiday deals.

If you’re planning a weekend at home, then how about dedicating some time to home improvements and refreshing your bathroom? Often the smallest room of the home, the bathroom is also usually one of the most neglected too. If your bathroom is in some need of a little TLC, how about taking advantage of some of our great offers that are running over this Bank Holiday weekend?

We’ve got some deals on the three different showering technologies – electric, mixer and digital – so there’s been no better time to snap up a deal.

Electric Showers

Electric showers are the most popular type of shower in the UK today – have you got one at home? This weekend, we’ve got our fantastic discounts on the GSX electric range:

GSX 8.5 reduced from £89.99 to £79.99

GSX Plus 8.5 reduced from £119.99 to £89.99

GSX Deluxe 8.5 reduced from £139.99 to £119.99

Mixer Showers

If you prefer to use your hot water system to heat your shower, then you’re better suited to a mixer shower rather than an electric. Our fab range of Ambassador thermostatic mixer showers is currently reduced from £152.00 down to £120.00. This range is available in both exposed and concealed designs, and each model is designed for a specific water system – combi boiler, high pressure or gravity-fed (low pressure) to make sure the shower works perfectly for the characteristics of the water system.

Digital Showers

The third type of shower technology that we offer is the newest and most innovative – digital shower technology. Digital showers can be installed with minimal disturbance to your bathroom as they are powered by a remote processor which is sited away from the shower controls (either in the loft, airing cupboard or under the bath). The water is fed from the processor to the shower head to deliver a sensational shower experience. Both of our digital showers are reduced over the weekend. The Gainsborough Digital Shower (for high pressure and combi boiler systems) is currently £399.00, down from £499.00, and the Gainsborough Pumped Digital Shower (for gravity-fed/low pressure systems) is discounted by £100 from £599.00 to £499.00.

As always, all of our showers are available with free next working day delivery to UK customers, and each of our showers comes with a manufacturer’s guarantee as standard.

 Update your Shower

Alternatively, if you don’t need a brand new shower, but you’d like to refresh part of your shower – perhaps the head or hose – then our comprehensive shower parts store has a range of spare parts available to buy online, again all with free delivery.

How Much Do Showers Cost To Run?

A ‘Sustainable Shower Study’ conducted by Unilever (who own Radox bath and shower products) has revealed the nation’s showering habits and how much these habits are costing us…

Using a shower sensor to monitor showers taken by 100 families over 10 days (2,600 in total) the research had some interesting findings, including:

  • More women than men multi-task in the shower, brushing their teeth, washing hair and shaving.
  • Teenage girls on average, spend nine and a half minutes in the shower, costing approx £123 a year
  • Boys aged 12 and under spend longer in the shower than anyone else – around 10 minutes on average

The research concluded that the cost of showering for the average four person family in the UK is £416 a year, or the equivalent of 90,000 litres of water.

An average eight minute shower, with an average water flow rate, uses approximately 62 litres of water and costs around 30p. This is compared to the average bath, which uses 80 litres of water.

So, not only will shorter showers save water, you’ll also be saving those pennies too!

New Electric Shower Range!

We’re very excited to announce the launch of our newest electric shower range – the gse range!

The gse range is our first range of graphite coloured showers – we had increasing demand from our customers to introduce a graphite range alongside our gloss white and satin chrome ranges, so here it is!

Gainsborough gse range

The gse range is available in 3 power ratings: 8.5kW, 9.5kW and 10.5kW so there will be a shower to suit most households. The showers offer easy-to-use controls making them suitable for the whole family to operate.

Electric showers have become increasingly popular in the UK in recent years due to their wide range of benefits. We have previously written a post on the benefits of electric showers.

All of our gse showers are supplied with fully chromed accessories (height adjustable shower rail, shower head and shower hose) to give them a contemporary finish. The 8.5kW and 9.5kW models are supplied with a single spray shower head, while the 10.5kW model is upgraded to a three spray shower head.

Safety Features

All three models in the gse range have a selection of safety features, including:

  • over temperature protection, which protects the user from selecting dangerously high temperatures
  • phased shut down, which switches the shower off gradually, flushing residual hot water from the system – protecting the next user and also reducing limescale build-up around the heating element to prolong the life of the shower.

Replacement Showers

Many of our customers with older Gainsborough electric showers will find that the gse range is a suitable replacement. We’ve listed all relevant shower models and any necessary information on our replacement showers page.

Prices start from £122 for the 8.5 gse electric shower, and all 3 models include free delivery.

Water Saving Infographic – Great Ways To Save Water

Saving water is one of our priorities here at Gainsborough Showers. We’re always looking for ways we can reduce the amount of water our showers use, whilst still giving a great performance for our customers.

We came across this great infographic from Water Saving Ideas which explains how much water is used in producing food and other household items. It’s a real eye opener! Although many of us often think about fixing dripping taps, turning the tap off when brushing our teeth, and taking shorter showers to save water, how many of us actually consider how much water is used to produce the food that we eat everyday?

At the end of the infographic, it suggests ways you can save water through switching certain groceries (although switching milk for beer sounds fun but we’re not quite sure about that one!)

Welcome to Part 2 of our 13 for 2013 posts. In this post, we’ll go through the last few features of our website, starting with…

8.) New Showers

In our opinion, this is the most exciting part of our website. It’s where we list all of our latest shower models. Currently, our new GSX electric showers are featured, but later this year we’ll be adding lots more new models and we can’t wait! Our product team are currently busy planning the new releases, and as soon as they’re launched you’ll find them on the New Showers pages. We always link through to the individual product pages from this page to allow our customers to find out more information and buy if they wish.

9.) Next Working Day Delivery

We deliver all of our showers and spare parts to UK customers completely free of charge. Small spare parts are sent via Royal Mail First Class service, while large parts (such as engines) and showers are delivered by courier on the next working day (when ordered before 2pm).

10.) Register Your Guarantee

For complete peace of mind, customers who buy a Gainsborough shower can register their guarantee online quickly and easily. There’s a handy button on our homepage, and there’s also a link within the Advice Centre.

11.) Shower Articles

To provide our customers with interesting and informative we’ve added several shower articles on our site. These articles are designed to help our customer in their search to buy a new shower, and they range from explaining the differences between electric and mixer showers to the pros and cons of different shower types.

12.) Installation Guides

Our showers are all supplied with an Installation Guide, but in case the hard copy gets misplaced, we’ve added downloadable PDFs onto our website. These shower installation guides can all be found within the Advice Centre

13.) About Us – History

Did you know that Gainsborough Showers has been established for over forty years? The About Our History section explains the varied heritage of the company from its humble beginnings back in 1972. It makes interesting reading for anyone curious about how Gainsborough Showers has evolved over the years.

So, that concludes our 13 helpful website features for 2013. We hope you enjoyed our 2-part series.

13 for 2013! [Part One]

Seeing as we’re in a brand New Year (although, almost at the end of the first month – where did January go?) we thought it would be a nice idea to explain 13 of the most helpful features on our websiteWhile 13 might be unlucky for some, we think it’s the perfect number. Our ultimate mission is to make buying a shower online quick, simple and painless. And to make sure we achieve that mission, we know that we need to have a brilliant website!

Gainsborough Website

This post will explain the first 7 features. Look out for Part Two which will go through the final 6 features.

1.) The Shower Store

We consider the Shower Store to be the heart of our website. It’s where we list all of our current ranges of showers, whether electric, mixer or  digital. We have made it easy for our customers to break down the categories even further by price, colour (for electrics) and home water system (for mixers) depending on which criteria are important. On each product page we have added plenty of detail to allow users to make an informed purchasing decision. So, that includes all features, as well as technical information such as water entry points as well as minimum and maximum pressure. We also display suggested alternative products at the bottom of each product page in case the current product is not quite suitable. Once the decision has been made, it’s a straightforward process to add the shower to the basket and complete the checkout process. And of course, all showers on our website are delivered free of charge.

2.) Help Me Choose

Now, while the Shower Store is definitely the heart of the site, the Help Me Choose function will be the starting point for many users. Help Me Choose has designed for customers who are not quite sure where to start. It will help them determine whether they want a mixer or an electric shower. For those who would like a mixer shower, the feature will help them work out which type of hot water system they have, if they are unsure. Once the type of shower has been determined, users will be directed to the relevant product listings with the Shower Store.

3.) Shower FAQs

Although many of our customers come to our website to buy a new shower, we have some current customers who may require some assistance. Our Shower FAQs have been devised by our knowledgeable Customer Service team to ensure that they contain the most appropriate advice. To keep things clear, the FAQs are separated into three sections: Electric Shower FAQs, Mixer Shower FAQs and General FAQs. On each page, users can find the solutions to some of the most commonly asked questions. We know this feature is particularly handy when the customer service department is closed. On every page, there is the option to contact us, whether by phone or email, should customers require further assistance.

4.) Parts Store

In addition to customers buying new showers and seeking advice, the Gainsborough website is also used as a spare parts store. If a part needs replacing, or the shower needs a refresh with a new hose or shower head, it’s very simple to find the relevant part and purchase. Customers can either browse by their shower model and then select the part from an exploded diagram, or alternatively type the part code into the search bar to be taken to the correct listing. Any customers that are unsure about their shower model can use the helpful Find Your Shower tool. Once the part has been selected, it is a simple process to add it the basket and complete the purchase. As with all showers, all spare parts come with free delivery.

5.) Shower Glossary

Our shower glossary is a relatively new addition to the website. It’s designed to help customers with some of the tricky technical terms that may be a bit confusing. At the moment, the Glossary can be found in the Advice Centre, but we plan to add a handy link in the future from each Product Page to make it easier to find (we’re nice like that).

6.) Replace an Old Model

If you have an older Gainsborough shower which is nearing the end of its life; and instead of buying a spare part you’d rather buy a brand new shower, then the Replace an Old Model page should be your first port of call. This page lists all of our older, now obsolete models, and suggests the best retro-fit replacement showers. Each suggestion conveniently links through to the respective Product Page too.

7.) Blog!

Yes, it’s this blog in position 7! Since it’s launch in February 2012 (almost 1 year old!), our blog has significantly increased in popularity, and continues to grow month on month. It’s now a valuable information and advice source for anyone interested in Gainsborough Showers – both current and potential new customers. We love to hear from you, so don’t be afraid to leave us a comment on any of our posts. And did you know it’s possible to receive this blog directly to your inbox? Sign up today and you’ll never have to come looking for us! A recent addition to our blog is the Twitter stream which features our latest tweets. New Year, New Bathroom?

The New Year has well and truly made its mark. So what resolutions did you make? To eat healthier, to give up smoking, or to make home improvements perhaps? If you’ve struggled to think of anything, or perhaps you’ve even already fallen at the first hurdle, don’t despair, how about making some changes around the home?

The start of a new year is the ideal time to refresh and renew, and often one of the most neglected rooms of the home is the bathroom. Does your bathroom need some New Year TLC? Thankfully, designers in the industry have predicted some bathroom trends for 2013 to help you decide on a new style:

Eco-friendly

Environmentally friendly products have been popular for some time now. Consumers are beginning to realise the importance of protecting the environment, and are buying products that reflect this. Think about the rise in ‘eco-friendly’ cars, and organic, environmentally friendly food. It’s the same with bathroom products – from water-saving taps, to eco-friendly shower heads, the bathroom industry has certainly taken notice of this consumer trend, and so there is plenty of choice for eco-conscious buyers. An added benefit of eco-friendly is that it usually means money-saving as well. In addition to water-saving devices, electric showers can be an economical choice for many homes as they work independently from the hot water system. By heating water on demand, installing an electric shower can mean that less energy is used to heat stored water that could otherwise be left wasted and unused.

Save Space!

Another trend for bathrooms in 2013 is going to be clever space-saving storage options. More and more homeowners are choosing to stay and extend their homes, rather than move house. With families growing  space becomes a premium, and with bathrooms typically being one of the smallest rooms in the home, storage space becomes even more scarce. While some homeowners may be able to extend their homes, add another bathroom or even an ensuite, there are many who need to make do with the space they have. So, the demand for cleverly designed, space-saving bathroom cabinets has become much greater.

Add Some Art

Typically, bathrooms tend to be quite visually sterile, with plain, earthy tiles, and neutral colours. As homeowners get braver with their interior design, bathrooms are becoming more exciting. Now, the hot and steamy condition of a bathroom isn’t the best place to hang valuable artwork, but a bright print protected by a waterproof glass screen could be an option to add some colour whilst withstanding the humid conditions.  Another idea is to add some eye-catching tiles to add a splash of colour to the room. Be creative!

Sensual Spa

Another bathroom trend for 2013 is to recreate spa like experiences at home. Many of us have had lovely experiences in posh hotels and health clubs, with their luxurious bathrooms, and now the trend is to recreate these relaxing, indulgences spaces in our own bathrooms. So, from heated towel rails, to underfloor heating, ambient lighting and streamlined, we’re all looking for the latest high-tech advances to make our bathrooms as luxurious as possible. Of course, when it comes to showers, you can’t get much more luxury than a digital shower. Press the button and the shower tells you when the water is heated and the shower is ready to go – no more testing the water with your arm! Extra touches around the room, such as candles, spa-like bottles and products all add to the effect.

Recreate the spa feel in your bathroom

Are you planning a revamp of your bathroom this year? What trends will you be choosing?
