Should you replace a bath with a shower?

It’s one of those common dilemmas among home owners planning bathroom refurbishments – should I get rid of the bath and have a stand-alone shower instead? While there is a common perception that a ‘bath-room’ should contain a bath, showers are much more popular for everyday use – they’re quick and fuss-free – perfect for our busy lives.

Of course, with any major household decision, there are advantages and disadvantages. Here we’ll take you through some of the main pros and cons of replacing your bath with a shower:

Advantages

1.) Increased space
Generally, when you replace a bath with a showering enclosure, you will free up some space in your bathroom. And with bathrooms frequently being the smallest room in the home, space is valuable! Showering enclosures are normally placed in the corner of the room, leaving you the rest of the room to arrange how you like.

2.) Time saving
It’s a fact that showers are quicker than baths. There’s no need to fill the bathtub and then spend half an hour sitting within the increasingly lukewarm water. Showers give you a burst of energy – just what you need in the morning to wake you up. And in fact, digital showers will even indicate to you when the water is heated to your preference and the shower is ready to go – preventing you from having to test the water with your arm. All in all, using less water will also save you money and be better for the environment!

3.) Greater choice
Today’s showers offer such a huge choice – from the different types of technology (electric, mixer or digital), through to different colours and designs, so there’s something to suit every household’s needs. While there is a great choice of different of different bath finishes, there is much more variety when it comes to showers and showering enclosures.

4.) Extra features
From dual shower heads, massaging body jets to LED lights that change the colour of water, modern showers are available with a whole host of features that baths can’t really compete with!

Disadvantages

Replacing the bath with a shower may be suitable for many people, but it may not be the right solution for everyone. Here are some of the potential drawbacks:

1.) Families prefer baths
It’s much easier to wash a child (or indeed, children) in a bath. Children can have playtime with their toys in the bath, so it’s much more appealing than a shower, and therefore much easier to work into a bedtime routine.

bath time

2.) Baths are relaxing
There’s nothing that can compare to a relaxing, steamy bath when you’re stressed or a little bit run down. So while a shower is fantastic for day-to-day washing, baths really are in a league of their own when it comes to relaxing.

3.) May struggle to sell your home
When it comes to sell your property in the future, you may find that it is not as appealing to families if you remove the bath. As detailed above, families, particularly those with younger children, will require at least bath in the property. Of course, if you are not planning to sell your property for some time, and replacing the bath with a shower suits your lifestyle more, then this is something you will need to weigh up.

How Much Do Showers Cost To Run?

A ‘Sustainable Shower Study’ conducted by Unilever (who own Radox bath and shower products) has revealed the nation’s showering habits and how much these habits are costing us…

Using a shower sensor to monitor showers taken by 100 families over 10 days (2,600 in total) the research had some interesting findings, including:

  • More women than men multi-task in the shower, brushing their teeth, washing hair and shaving.
  • Teenage girls on average, spend nine and a half minutes in the shower, costing approx £123 a year
  • Boys aged 12 and under spend longer in the shower than anyone else – around 10 minutes on average

The research concluded that the cost of showering for the average four person family in the UK is £416 a year, or the equivalent of 90,000 litres of water.

An average eight minute shower, with an average water flow rate, uses approximately 62 litres of water and costs around 30p. This is compared to the average bath, which uses 80 litres of water.

So, not only will shorter showers save water, you’ll also be saving those pennies too!

Refresh Your Bathroom This Easter

The Easter bank holiday weekend is typically the time when we start thinking about improvements around the home – from starting or completing DIY tasks, to painting the spare bedroom or just generally de-cluttering the cupboards, there’s always something on the list to be done. If you’re planning to give your bathroom a refresh this Easter weekend, then why not consider one of our brand new gse graphite electric showers?

graphite electric shower

We think these graphite electric showers would look striking in a variety of different bathroom styles – from contemporary to more traditional. They’re available in a choice of three power ratings: 8.5kW, 9.5kW and 10.5kW, so there is a choice to suit most households. We know that our customers like their bathrooms to be stylish, and no longer is the bathroom the ‘forgotten’ room of the home. We have developed this graphite range of electric showers to meet increasing customer demand for different styles and designs.”

One of the biggest bathroom trends for 2013 is a simple, natural style of bathroom. The use of simple lines and natural materials, such as woods and stones, to recreate a spa-like feel at home are all set to make their mark on bathrooms in 2013. The use of graphite colour would complement natural stone beautifully, so our gse showers would work well with this emerging style.

If you are interested in finding out more about the new gse range, the 3 electric showers are now listed on our website www.gainsboroughshowers.co.uk and prices start from £122 for the 8.5 gse.

New Electric Shower Range!

We’re very excited to announce the launch of our newest electric shower range – the gse range!

The gse range is our first range of graphite coloured showers – we had increasing demand from our customers to introduce a graphite range alongside our gloss white and satin chrome ranges, so here it is!

Gainsborough gse range

The gse range is available in 3 power ratings: 8.5kW, 9.5kW and 10.5kW so there will be a shower to suit most households. The showers offer easy-to-use controls making them suitable for the whole family to operate.

Electric showers have become increasingly popular in the UK in recent years due to their wide range of benefits. We have previously written a post on the benefits of electric showers.

All of our gse showers are supplied with fully chromed accessories (height adjustable shower rail, shower head and shower hose) to give them a contemporary finish. The 8.5kW and 9.5kW models are supplied with a single spray shower head, while the 10.5kW model is upgraded to a three spray shower head.

Interesting Facts About Showers [Infographic]

Today is World Water Way, and to raise awareness of water usage, we have posted a fascinating infographic about showering.

In the UK, around 68% of household water is used in the bathroom – mostly in toilet flushing and showers and baths.

We also found the Men vs Women statistics particularly interesting.

For example, 70% of men shower daily compared to 57% of women, however, 64% of women think about to-do lists in the shower compared to 48% of men. So does this mean that women are too busy to shower everyday? And when they do, they are still thinking about other tasks to do? This may be why they tend to shower for 2 minutes longer than men.

Have a read through and leave a comment to let us know what you think…

14% of UK Homes Don’t Have A Shower

We recently read a report published by AMA Research and found out that 86% of UK homes have at least one shower. That means that 14% of homes in the UK don’t have a shower. This got us thinking about how popular showers have become in the UK, and how today they’re just part of our everyday lives which we don’t really think about. So we decided to do some investigation into the history of showers. We wondered…

Where did showers come from originally?

Who designed the first showers?

How did people wash in the past?

And we found some interesting results. So interesting in fact, that we created a bright and colourful infographic (see below).
